JHC B FINAL
MOOREFIELD 3-9 SARSFIELDS 0-13
LOCAL bragging rights are with Moorefield now after they overcame a plucky Sarsfields side to take the intermediate B title on Sunday evening.
The game was very even to begin with as the two sides cancelled each other out. Three Moorefield points from Pat Gleeson, Niall Kennedy and David Carroll were matched by a point from David Roche, and two Daniel Watson points from frees. Moorefield then began to grab the game by the scruff of the neck.
Their midfield partnership of David Carrol and Barry McGann was formidable and it was Carroll who kept his cool to convert two frees from distance. The Moores were now firmly in control and a long ball in towards the square resulted in a goalmouth scramble before the ball was buried into the back of the net by Niall Kennedy.
Sarsfields were now desperately trying to force their way back into the game. Some excellent work from their half-forward line resulted in a free which was once again, duly converted by Daniel Watson. David Carrol then added to his personal tally with a fantastic point from play, before Conor O’Mahoney capped off an excellent Sarsfields move with another point. Moorefield then extended their lead further, and it was once again, David Carroll who got on the score sheet with a couple of points from play. Sarsfields were struggling to keep their opponents at bay, and were eventually forced to concede a free in a dangerous area.
Niall Kennedy seized the opportunity, firing the ball into the back of the net. Carrol then scored his seventh point of the evening with a routine point inside the forty-five to give his side some breathing space.
Despite a Daniel Watson point on the stroke of half time Sarsfield went in behind at the break. Whatever was said in the Sarsfields camp at half time certainly paid dividends as they came out all guns blazing in the second half.
Dave Roche broke the second half deadlock before a couple of points from Daniel Watson narrowed the deficit. The Sash were well on top now and points from Alan Barett, Gary Breslin and Mick Dunne gave them a glimmer of hope.
However, Moorefield refused to give up and Gearoid Power ended the Sash’s comeback with a Lar Corbett- esque finish following a punt forward from Barry McGann to all but end the tie.
Although Conor O’Mahoney recorded a consolation point for his side in the dying seconds it wasn’t to be Sarsfields day, as Moorefield celebrated emphatically along with their large crowd of travelling supporters.
