We talk to player Bill Mc Donnell as he prepares for the Intermediate Hurling Final at the weekend. Moorefield take on Naas at 2.15pm in St. Conleth’s Park this Sunday. Please come out and support them!
Bill has played with the junior hurling team since 1999 when he got player of the year. Moorefield had no hurling team from 2000 to 2005. When they returned to the field Bill played their first game against Ardclough…and won. He has played every year since then; winning Junior A, Junior B, Intermediate B, Intermediate A Championships along the way. He is one of the few lads to have played every year. He is joined this year with his brother Ian. Hopefully many more years still left! Best of luck….
Player’s profile
Name: Bill McDonnell
Date of birth: 08/08/79
Height: 5″11
Position: Fullback
Position you would like to play:Would love to still have the legs for halfback, it’s strange seeing someone else wearing my number, but it helps that it’s staying in the family.
Favourite club player: It was Dave Carroll up until training last week!!! But now I’d have to say John Finnegan is a joy to watch.
Favourite county player: JJ Delaney.
Biggest influence on your football career: Has to be my Da,Ma and brothers, if you don’t come home with medals in my house you feel left out!!!
Best advice someone has given you: The next ball is the most important ball!!
Best grounds you’ve played in: Sarsfield Park is a great pitch for Hurling and have great memories of great battles and victories up there.
Best player you’ve played with: Oh there’s been so many class players, Joe Fitz, Jim McMullen,Mick Maloney, Dave Barrett, Dave Symth all deserve a mention but I think John Finnegan is different class. Pity we’re only getting to see him in the twilight of his career.
Best player you’ve played against: Always my next opponent….
Sporting hero: Paul McGrath
One county player you’d like to see play for Moorefield: Joe Canning……We could do with a good full forward to let Benny back to Full Back.
Career high: Being Captain when we won the Junior Championship in 2011.
Career low:Between 2000 and 2006 when there was no hurling in Moorefield.
